The Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI)

The Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) test is a fire safety test used to determine the minimum concentration of oxygen in an oxygen-nitrogen mixture that is required to sustain the combustion of a material. It is an important measure of the flammability and fire resistance of materials, especially polymers and plastics.

The LOI test is conducted in a controlled environment within a test chamber or apparatus.

The LOI value indicates the material’s resistance to burning in an oxygen-depleted environment. Materials with higher LOI values require a higher concentration of oxygen to sustain combustion, implying better fire resistance. Conversely, materials with lower LOI values are more flammable and ignite more readily in the presence of oxygen. The Limiting Oxygen Index test is especially relevant for applications where fire safety is critical, such as aerospace, transportation, electronics, and building materials.
